Meet The Change Makers : Sloanie
Meet The Change Makers : Sloanie
We got to hear from the people behind Sloanie : the slow-fashion, ethical underwear brand that's taking over!
When did you start Sloanie and what motivated that decision?
We launched Sloanie in September 2019. Our motivation was born out of frustration: we got tired of the lack of innovation in the underwear industry. Even the most premium brands continue to use old-fashioned materials like cotton, despite the availability of softer, more sustainable fibres. So, we decided to do something about it! After years of researching, prototyping and planning, we are so excited to be able to share our super-soft, ethically-made, sustainable undies with the world. We like to think of them as today’s luxuries, for tomorrow’s world.
What would you say Sloanie stands for as a brand?
We stand for sustainability without compromise: in every meaning of the phrase. Our underwear is for everyone and anyone that places importance on comfortable, sustainable, and natural products that look and feel amazing.
Why is sustainability so important to you?
Sustainability is important to all of us, as we find ourselves in a state of climate emergency. But, it’s even more relevant to the fashion industry which is the second-largest polluter…right behind the petroleum industry. It’s up to brands like us to make real changes to the way we source and manufacture our garments, as opposed to making hollow promises. We also want to give people a sustainable choice when it comes to underwear because this is definitely lacking in the clothing landscape today.
In your opinion, can the fashion industry ever truly be sustainable?
We are excited to see these questions begin to reach the mainstream, with movements like Fashion Revolution sparking important discussions. In order to be sustainable, not only must items of clothing be made in a conscious manner using eco-friendly materials and processes, but they must also be worn for a significant amount of time before being retired from your wardrobe. That’s why we focus on timeless, minimalist styles which are made from durable materials that don’t pill, stretch, or fade compared to conventional alternatives. Fast fashion will never be sustainable: that’s why we’re slowing things down.
What's been the biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge has been creating a truly ethical and sustainable supply chain. The textile and apparel industry is predominantly geared towards fast and cheap production at the expense of labour standards and our environment, so identifying suppliers who are able to join us in doing things differently has been tricky at times. It’s also been difficult to go beyond eco buzzwords and take a frank look at where we can best make a positive impact in our supply chain.
But, we knew this would be a challenge and are proud to have stood by our commitments to sustainability and ethics by working with some great suppliers across Europe, and the world.
Can you tell us why TENCEL Modal fabric is so important?
It’s so important to our products as it allows us to create something that’s not only sustainable but also luxuriously soft and durable: it really is the best of both worlds. It’s made from cellulose that’s derived predominantly from Austrian beech trees. Using innovative and unique technologies, our Austrian manufacturer transforms this wood pulp into Modal material using high-tech, sustainable processes. Inspired by the circular nature of the ecological cycle of trees, their closed loop process is low-carbon and minimises energy usage, wastewater resource intensity and harmful emissions. It’s so impressive that they are able to recover and reuse up to 95% of production materials. Modal is also vegan and free from harmful chemicals, certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100. In short: it’s super-soft (3x softer than cotton!), antimicrobial, hypoallergenic, moisture-wicking and sustainable – what isn’t there to love?
Where do you see Sloanie in the next 5 years?
We want Sloanie to become the destination for anyone looking for a sustainable and natural brand.
